People don’t realize how incredibly connected your home environment is to your overall mental health and well being. In other words, your home is the mirror reflection of what goes on in your brain. Sounds scary!!
Think about it. Therapists even use ink blobs to read into what goes on in your subconscious.
The colors you’ve chosen, the pictures you put out, even the piles of laundry, the way things are laid out on the surface all tell a story of who you are. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Your home is your brain on display.
And after the year 2021, I think it’s safe to say we all want to feel a little better next year. Happier. Lighter. More true to ourselves. If you’re like most other people in this world, you probably have a couple New Year’s Resolutions you’re planning to “try out.”
So how about a different New Year’s Resolution. Let's rewrite our stories by reshaping our home environments in a way that will set us up to be who we want to be.
Set up your home to make you want to paint more
Set up your home to make you want to eat healthier
Set up your home to make you want to feel less depressed
Set up your home to make you feel and become more productive
This is one reason why I love home design. It’s not just about making things pretty, but to make it functional, purposeful, and create new outward reflections of what you want from your life.
Even if you’re not a decorator, your choices in what pillows you have on your bed, where you lay your mail, and how you put away your shoes are all part of the string of events that take place in your brain and tell a lot about who you are.
From the way I organize my Tupperware, decorate my walls, and choice of nice bright curtains to let the light in, these are all key factors that will enhance my general attitude and mood in the day.
What’s my point?
Use your home as a tool to help you and to reshape you
to be who you want to be.
- You want to work out more this year? Uncover that treadmill and make your home gym more convenient & compelling. This easy to do peg board organizer is a cute, up-beat way to make working out feel less like a chore (Photo credit Better Homes & Garden).
- You want to feel lighter and less stressed? Maybe your environment could use some candles, aroma therapies or other sense-provoking stimulations that can help you to relax.
- Are you feeling depressed or hopeless these days? Maybe your environment is lacking natural sunlight to infuse more vitamin D into your body. Or maybe your home is lacking C O L O R to give you a sense of vibrancy and life to set your mood for the day. Grays griege and beige may not be your thing!
- Feeling overwhelmed lately? What if you rearrange your furniture to improve the comfort and convenience of having family time together, making room for more enjoyment in your space?
- Want to be more organized this year? Start by dedicating a space for a fun dry erase calendar and create a command center. A new and improved drop zone for your mail, keys, coupons, in and outgoing bills, To-Do lists, etc. You will feel SO MUCH BETTER having created that space. (Photo Credit 1THRIVE)
- Want to eat healthier this year? Start by hiding those sweets! Make those *inconvenient* at the back of the pantry and start displaying your fruit and vegetables in pretty bowls and baskets to grab-and-go. What meets the eye is what grabs the heart.
THESE are the golden nuggets of how a house becomes a home, when you realize it’s NOT just a place where you eat, sleep and 💩
It’s your safe place that gives rise to what you’re going to do today and tomorrow. Gives purpose in what your goals will be and drives your overall level of motivation to accomplish those goals. Our homes are the very external representation of the abstract issues we struggle to understand on the daily.
-Find ways to make it brighter
-Find ways to make it homey
-Find ways to make it convenient
-Most importantly, find ways to love it and to love yourself this year
HAPPY NEW YEAR from H O M E 🌿 E N V E E
